Thonet Art nouveau coat rack in plywood with eight S-shaped hooks. Good condition. Michael Thonet was born on October 2, 1796 in Bopard-am-Rhein, Prussia. Quite fittingly he began life near the start of the industrial revolution. He would go on to form a huge company and pioneer mass production, both attributes of this new industrial era. He trained as an apprentice cabinet maker in his home town. After his apprenticeship, he began almost immediately to experiment with bentwood and veneers in furniture. By 1856, he had perfected his technique and prepared for mass production through opening his own factory in Vienna. Thonet focused his work on bending wood. By the mid 1840's he started twisting his laminated pieces, allowing them to be bent in multiple directions. The wood then is rasped to give a round of oval cross section. The impact of Thonet was extraordinary and far reaching. He affected the business of furniture, the avant-garde art establishment, and the design process of many products, from his own day to the present.
